Wm Morrison's go-ahead to bid for Safeway was confirmed this week after trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt accepted pledges from other supermarket groups that had been vying to an make offer. Wm Morrison must sell 53 stores in areas where there would be local competition concerns as a result of buying Safeway. Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco have agreed not to buy Safeway or any part of it that would cause competition concerns at the Office of Fair Trading.
