RTPI NEWS: President visits South West

During his recent visit to the South West Branch, president Vincent Goodstadt was the guest of Torbay Council. Leader of the council Chris Harris, head of development and conservation planning Les Crump and head of museum services Dr Michael Rhodes showed him round Torre Abbey, founded in 1196 as a monastery. They outlined the Heritage Lottery bid that has been submitted for major grant aid towards the abbey's refurbishment programme.

The president then toured Torquay Harbour, the scene of much recent regeneration work. He was taken round the new, highly acclaimed Living Coasts visitor attraction by the principal architect Derek Elliott of Kay Elliott.

The president then moved on to Exeter, where he met a number of the staff in Devon County Council's environment department. The president was particularly interested to hear planners' views on the working arrangements envisaged when the government's new planning system is implemented.
