Work has started on the northern extension of Manchester's Arndale centre following the closure and demolition of Cannon Street and a former bus station. The £150 million project is the final piece in Manchester City Council's millennium masterplan for the regeneration of central Manchester. The extension will increase the centre's overall retail space by 91,400 sq m and will provide 75 shops, a covered winter garden and restaurants. Completion of the Manchester Arndale redevelopment is due in phases, starting in Christmas 2005.
