Boroughs pick team to hurry Olympic plans

A joint planning team has been established to fast-track planning applications associated with London's 2012 Olympic bid.

The joint planning authority team will work on behalf of the four boroughs covered by the Olympic masterplan to deal with development control issues and any referrals after applications have been decided.

The team has been established by the London Boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest. It is geared up to determine any applications as swiftly as possible to give the capital's bid the best chance of success.

The team includes development control officers from the four Olympic zone boroughs, with planners from the London Borough of Greenwich and the Greater London Authority seconded to support them.

Independent planning consultant Janet Thomas has been appointed to lead the team. "The boroughs have chosen an innovative way of moving this forward," she said. "Their involvement means that we are able to draw on vast experience."
