Plans for the first phase of the £26 million redevelopment of a shopping centre on Birmingham's Castle Vale estate were approved by the government last week. The scheme includes shops, offices, a police station and a public square around St Cuthbert's Church. Subsequent phases will involve building houses, a college and a community campus including a library. The approval allows the Castle Vale Housing Action Trust to make progress on one of the final stages of the area's regeneration, which started ten years ago.
