Guide sets out how to protect playing fields

A document consolidating advice on protecting playing fields from development was published by Sport England and the National Playing Fields Association (NPFA) this week.

Funded through Sport England's green spaces programme, the guidance draws together for the first time all the information that community groups or local authorities need to take the first steps towards protecting playing fields.

The guide explains how communities and organisations can obtain professional help from the NPFA. It describes how the association negotiated a deal to protect east London's Mile End Park in perpetuity when the land came under threat in the 1980s.

Guidance on Long-Term Recreational Land Protection is available, free, from Sport England (tel) 0870 5210255 (quote reference 2183).
