REGENERATION NEWS: Calls for regeneration of smaller towns

A leading developer has called on the UK's retail property industry to explore ways to regenerate smaller towns. John Richards, president of the British Council of Shopping Centres, told delegates at the organisation's annual conference last week that the industry has built up unparalleled experience in regenerating major urban areas. But he added that it must start to do the same in other locations. "Achievements in locations such as Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle put UK property professionals among world leaders in urban regeneration," said Richards. "We now need to be more innovative and to turn our hand to creating workable and economically viable solutions for smaller towns and locations."
