IN BRIEF: Contaminated "ghost ships" continue to Hartlepool

Two contaminated "ghost ships" on their way to the UK from the USA will continue to Hartlepool for safe storage before returning, DEFRA announced last week. The decision follows discussions between environment secretary Margaret Beckett and the US department of transport. The Environment Agency and government departments considered alternative sites but decided that they are unable to take the ships safely at short notice. An immediate return of the ships would be impractical, ruled Beckett.
