IN BRIEF: Water companies' long-term strategies are inadequate

Water companies' long-term strategies to cope with drought are inadequate, according to the Environment Agency. In a report published this week, the agency claims that the firms' draft water resource plans, which set out supply management over the next 25 years, need "significant work". According to the report, some environmental improvements needed to meet legal obligations have not been carried out and many companies have failed to prepare for a predicted increase in household demand. Final resource plans are due in the spring.
