Tories release line-up details of front bench

Conservative Party leader Michael Howard unveiled a streamlined shadow cabinet this week designed to provide a stronger challenge to the government.

Howard slashed his team from 26 to 12 members. Theresa May becomes shadow secretary of state for the environment and transport. She will be helped on environmental issues by Caroline Spelman, with Damian Green covering transport.

The new shadow secretary of state for local and devolved government affairs, David Curry, will be responsible for planning. Eric Pickles remains shadow secretary of state for local government, while Bernard Jenkin becomes shadow secretary of state for the regions.

Howard claimed that the changes show how the Tories could provide an effective alternative to Labour.
