Welsh economic development minister Andrew Davies has given the green light for work to start on cleaning up 200,000 tonnes of waste tar on a former phurnacite plant in the Cynon Valley. Davies has authorised the Welsh Development Agency to begin work on the £17 million project to turn the former smokeless fuel plant near the village of Abercwmboi into a mix of landscaped open space and employment development. The agency will now seek permission from Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council to begin the work necessary to removing the tar.
