REGENERATION NEWS: Backbenchers probe heritage renewal links

The contribution of historic buildings to urban regeneration will be the subject of a Commons select committee probe, it was announced last week.

The House of Commons ODPM committee is investigating the link between heritage and regeneration, including an assessment of how historic buildings contribute to urban regeneration. The inquiry will analyse the planning system's role and whether planning and the listing of historic buildings helps or hinders.

MPs on the committee will also look at whether organisations carrying out regeneration projects pay sufficient regard to listed buildings, whether all government departments take account of the historic environment and whether any fiscal and legislative changes should be made.

The committee is calling for evidence to be submitted by 24 November.
