Proposals to make police forces more accountable and responsive were put forward by the government this week. A Home Office consultation paper launched by home secretary David Blunkett outlines a vision for a modernised police service that gives communities a bigger say in local policing, and tougher action on anti-social behaviour and crime. The paper proposes to introduce "community advocates" to ensure that public concerns are taken into account. The paper follows research showing public ignorance of the role of police authorities.
