NEWS IN BRIEF: Campaigners for the creation of a South Downs national park ...

Campaigners for the creation of a South Downs national park have expressed concerns over the sums that local authorities will be spending opposing the plan. Six councils opposed to the designation in the area will be appearing at the inquiry, which opens next week. South Downs Campaign officer Chris Todd said: "We are concerned that some local authorities continue to oppose a South Downs national park despite overwhelming public support for one. This raises serious questions about their justification in spending public funds in opposing something that the majority of people want." The UK's oldest surviving amusement park ride has been protected from demolition following a decision by English Heritage to spot-list the structure.
