The 7,400 square metre scheme, to be known as Gateshead Quays, would sit adjacent to the southern end of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge between the Sage Gateshead cultural venue and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on the site of the existing Mill Road car park.
According to a design and access statement, the site "is perceived as the last jigsaw piece in the [town's] quayside development [and] will ensure a holistic 'entertainment destination creation' whereby all other existing and future venues work together to compliment and harmonise with one another".
The document adds: "It is clear that the proposed mixed-use development comprising a multi-functional indoor arena, exhibition and conference centre and dual-banded hotel fully conforms to the adopted local plan and other material planning conditions."
The document also says that the proposals "seek to drive forward the continued regeneration of the Gateshead Quays area by delivering a landmark development of excellent design on a currently vacant site".
The plans have been submitted by Ask:PATRIZIA - a joint venture between Ask Real Estate and PATRIZIA AG, a real estate investment partner.
Lichfields is planning consultancy for the scheme while architect firm HOK is producing the site masterplan as well as designing the arena and conference and exhibition centre.
John Hughes, managing director of Ask Real Estate said: “We have undertaken a programme of public consultation with local stakeholders and neighbours which has informed our plans for Gateshead Quays.
“We are hopeful that the scheme will achieve full planning consent later this year.”
