Oldham Council said its former head of planning Stephen Irvine has stepped down from the role but would not give any reasons why.

Helen Lockwood, deputy chief executive of the council said: "I can confirm that Stephen Irvine has resigned as head of planning at Oldham Council.

"We wish Steve well in the future and thank him for all his hard work for Oldham Council over the years."

Lockwood said that "allegations" had been made about Irvine but "they were not related to his role in supporting the council’s planning committee nor to the advice or outcome of any planning decision".

She said the council had not had a chance "to undertake an investigation or reach any conclusion as to the validity of those allegations".

The council gave no further details on the nature of these allegations.

Irvine told Planning that he did not wish to comment on the issue.

NOTE: This story was updated at 3.40pm on Tuesday 13 August to clarify that no internal investigation had been carried out by the council in relation to Irvine.
