Biodiversity mitigation strategy protects local wildlife site

A plan to mitigate the impact of up to 120 dwellings in Essex has been supported by an inspector who agreed that it would not adversely affect a locally important wildlife site.

The wildlife area adjoined a nature reserve designated as a SSSI and both were managed by a local wildlife trust. The scheme accorded with an emerging garden suburb masterplan, the inspector concluded, and the provision of alternative areas of open space and recreational opportunities would reduce the impact of human activities on the wildlife sites. Alternative roosting areas for protected bats would be provided and existing hedgerows maintained and enhanced. Appropriate infrastructure contributions had been agreed and the appeal was allowed.
