Residential character maintained by single storey dwelling scheme

Permission has been granted for the erection of a dwelling in Somerset despite objections by some local residents that it would erode the character of the area.

In rejecting this concern an inspector placed weight on the overall size of the land which at almost 0.9ha was capable of accommodating a single storey dwelling extending to 179m2. The design included a ‘living wall’ and a sedum roof, and boundary planting and landscaping would enhance the amenity of the site. Being sited at the foot of a slope and with a low profile the dwelling would not undermine the residential quality of the locality.
