Student housing conversion maintains street character

The conversion and extension of a terrace house in Cheshire to provide eight student bedrooms would maintain the character of the street, an inspector has decided, having regard to the existing proportion of houses in multiple occupation (HsMO).

The scheme would meet the council’s minimum room size standards and the extension would not harm the character of the host property, she held. Since 88 per cent of the properties within the street were in use as HsMO the addition of a further unit would not undermine the amenity of existing residents or the quality of the area.
