Redevelopment thwarted by gas site safety risk

Plans to convert a motorcycle showroom in Middlesex into a replacement showroom with flats above have been refused due to the hazard presented by a nearby gas holder.

The Health and Safety Executive had advised that the scheme was unacceptable due to the risk to future occupiers from the holder. Although the operator had decided to decommission the facility, no timescale for revocation of its hazardous substances consent had been disclosed.

The inspector decided that until the gas holder's future had been formally determined, it remained a hazard. He considered that it would be inappropriate to impose a condition preventing development from proceeding until the consent was revoked.

Inspector: Ian McHugh; Written representations
