John McNairney has been appointed as the next chief planner for Scotland, it has been announced.

McNairney, who is currently assistant chief planner, will take over the role as the Scottish government's most senior planner next month. He succeeds incumbent Jim Mackinnon, who is retiring.

Residents from Crystal Palace in south-east London have failed to block two housing schemes planned for the area's park. A High Court judge has backed the secretary of state's 2010 decision to grant outline permission for the first stage of a masterplan aimed at halting the park's deterioration.

The publishers of Planning are looking to employ a keen planning student or graduate to help us research our annual Guide to Planning Consultants this summer.
