Public hearing for controversial Scots waste plant

A public hearing into controversial plans for a recycling plant on a site next to a popular park in Aberdeen took place yesterday.

A planning application for a household waste recycling plant on the former Grove Nursery site in Hazelhurst has been lodged with Aberdeen City Council by developer SITA UK.

However, the plans have been criticised by resident groups due to the proposed site’s proximity to Hazlehead Park, which is home to a memorial to the 1988 Piper Alpha North Sea oil platform disaster, which killed 167 men.

The council said that the public hearing had been held because the plan "represents a departure from the council’s development plan, relates to land within council ownership and has attracted more than 20 letters of objection".

It said that the proposed development would go before its development management committee "in due course".
