Data Check - Transport spending per head in London

Spending on transport in London increased to £774 per head in 2010/11, more than twice the amount spent in any other English region, according to Treasury figures.

The largest percentage rise in the amount spent per head on transport was in the East of England, which spent £328 in 2010/11, up 18 per cent on the previous year. London was the only other region to see a hike in the amount spent per head, spending 7.4 per cent more than in 2009/10. All other regions saw a fall in the amount spent per head on transport in 2010/11, with the West Midlands suffering the biggest drop at 11 per cent. Geoff Inskip, chairman of public transport body the Passenger Transport Executive Group, said more transport investment is needed in major regional cities to "rebalance the economy".
