Developer submits 5,000-home plan in Medway

An outline planning application has been submitted for 5,000 homes and 44,000sq meters of office space on a 325-hectare site at Medway in Kent.

Medway Council will consider the plans for the mixed-use development at Lodge Hill, a former Ministry of Defence (MoD) site near Chattenden. The proposals are being brought forward by developer Land Securities and Defence Estates, the MoD's property arm.

The application also includes two hotels, a secondary school, three primary schools, retail space and community facilities.

The Royal Society of Military Engineering currently occupies the site but will be leaving in 2012. If the planning application is approved development is expected to start in 2013.

Lodge Hill is identified in Medway Council’s emerging core strategy as a preferred site for new housing and other facilities. Public consultation on the proposals has been taking place since April 2009.

Consultancy CB Richard Ellis is advising Land Securities.
