The planning committee of the council voted to reject the plans, by developer Neptune Consultants, for 377 apartments in six buildings, including a 12-storey tower with roof garden.

The plans also included an office block, commercial space, a new sea wall and a new home for Poole Amateur Rowing Club.

Residents groups had objected to the scheme due to concerns over the high density, and its effect on the old town.

A spokesman for Neptune expressed disappointment at the decision.
