Cardiff University’s We’re Totally Pickled took home the £300 prize after finishing in top spot. Third year undergraduates Yvonne Wilday, Stephen Agyeman-Kuma, Hannah Machin and Charles Thomas-Davies scored 68 points out of a possible 100 over five hard-fought rounds. "We never dreamed we’d get this far in the competition," said Machin.

We’re Totally Pickled go through to the national final on 23 March along with Only Here For The Freebies, a team of third-year undergraduates from the University of the West England (UWE). They will be joined by six more teams from heats in London, Birmingham and Manchester over the next fortnight in competing for the £1,500 golden prize.

Eleven teams – nine from Cardiff and two from UWE – entered Tuesday night’s competition hosted by Neil Harris of Cardiff’s department of city and regional planning at O’Neill’s Bar. Guests included RTPI Cymru national director Roisin Willmott and RTPI Cymru chair Anna Prescott.

RPS fielded four staff members from its Cardiff office – senior director Lyn Powell, director Mark Roberts, associate Chris Tookey and planner Abigail Rees, who first made contact with the firm when she competed in the 2009 Planning Student Quiz.

"We were delighted to see so many contestants at the Cardiff event. It shows how buoyant students feel towards the planning profession despite the uncertainties in the state of the economy," said Powell.
