Panel leader appointed to assess planning research

Professor Alan Penn has been appointed by the UK higher education funding bodies as chair of the panel responsible for assessing the quality and impact of planning research in UK universities.

The panel, which will also be responsible for assessing research in architecture and the built environment, will deliver its assessment as part of the funding councils' research excellence framework in 2014. Penn is professor of architectural and urban computing at University College London and dean of the university's Bartlett faculty of the built environment. His own research has focused on modelling behavioural responses to urban design. He is also a founder and director of the urban design consultancy Space Syntax Ltd.
