Open Spaces Society eyes green spaces designations

The Open Spaces Society has launched a campaign to capitalize on the government's plans for a new green spaces designation.

The Coalition’s Programme for Government unveiled in May included a pledge to create a new designation – similar to SSSIs – to protect green areas of particular importance to local communities.

This was confirmed earlier this month in the DCLG's Business Plan which said the first new designations would be published by April 2012.

The Open Spaces Society has written to all its members asking them, from their local knowledge and experience of green spaces, to tell the society their ideas on what the new designation should achieve and what are the priorities.

It then hopes to advise the government on its proposals.

Open Spaces Society case officer Nicola Hodgson: "This is a significant opportunity for the Open Spaces Society which has for the past 145 years championed the cause of green spaces.

"We want to tell government what we believe this new designation should achieve, for the benefit of the public."
