Council logs plant protest

Central Bedfordshire Council has claimed that the Infrastructure Planning Commission's (IPC) only live application may go against national and local policy.

The council has written to the IPC to express its concerns over Covanta Energy's plans for an energyfrom-waste plant at Rookery South Pit near Stewartby.

The 16-page response cites the size of the facility an impact on local residents' amenity and the highway network. It claims that waste would have to be sourced from a much greater area.

"There will be a huge visual impact on the area as well as increased noise and air quality and odour issues. We have also raised concerns over the planning process," said sustainable development portfolio holder Tom Nicols. The IPC does not comment on any application prior to examination.
