Waste water policy issued

DEFRA has launched a consultation into the national policy statement (NPS) for waste water.

Included in the document are the Thames Tideway Tunnel and the replacement for Deephams sewage treatment works, both located in London.

Other projects may be added if they are needed or deemed appropriate by Ofwat or the Environment Agency. The consultation runs until 22 February.

Twelve NPSs are scheduled - six on energy, three on transport and three on water and waste. Revised drafts of the six energy NPSs were released last month.

Meanwhile, a final version of the transport NPS on ports is still awaited and statements on national road and rail networks and airports have yet to be published.

Bircham Dyson Bell partner Angus Walker said: "The main feature of the NPS is that the Infrastructure Planning Commission is only expected to deal with two waste water projects, with one sewerage company out of nine in England responsible for both."
