Planning Stats

£2bn - Amount pledged by housing minister Grant Shapps to improve the condition of social homes. Ministers believe the previous system for allocating money was overly bureaucratic, and meant councils spent too much time and expense jumping through hoops.

£12m - Cost of a Hindu temple and community centre in Northampton which has been granted planning permission by West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.

The Kutumbh Centre will include leisure facilities and a centre to promote Anglo-Indian business and will use solar and geothermal energy.

£2,250 - Annual saving on utility bills that housing minister Grant Shapps says an improved green rating for new homes will achieve. The code for sustainable homes, introduced in April 2007 has been updated to take into account new rules for energy efficiency in buildings.

47 - Minutes of the average daily commute, a ten-year low according to a new study by the TUC. The time has fallen by almost five minutes since 2006, mainly because of the growth in home working.

3,400 - Number of homes that will be built as part of plans to redevelop Battersea Power Station that have been approved by the London Borough of Wandsworth. Restoration of the main power station will be completed by 2016 and a £211 million section 106 agreement will fund transport improvements including an extension of the Northern Line from Kennington.

3,000 - Number of properties Wrexham Council is planning to fit with solar panels as part of a £25 million project. The scheme would involve fitting photovoltaic panels to a third of the council's housing stock, and would take advantage of the UK government's Feed in Tariff scheme.
