New Lake District planning framework launched

A new Lake District planning framework document for developments in the national park over the next 15 years, has been given approval today.

The local development framework document aims to "promote a proactive, positive approach to managing development".

New policies will tackle a lack of affordable housing; increasing traffic volume and seasonal congestion; lack of diverse employment opportunities; decline in rural services; and erosion of tranquillity and local distinctiveness.

Spatial planning and communities team leader Chris Warren said: "What makes this planning document stand out from all our previous strategies is that this is flexible to meet the needs and demands of our communities, which include those who live, work and visit the Lake District.

"It’s a shift away from prescriptive policies and now we can work better with everyone to manage development proactively.

"At all times in writing this document we have been inclusive by involving everyone we could in our discussions and consultations."
