Basildon revamp moves ahead

A consortium of developers Wilson Bowden and Barratt Homes has been given the green light to draw up plans for a £1 billion regeneration of Basildon in Essex.

It will now be required to prepare a masterplan within 12 months. The council has been advised on the project by DTZ and Pinsent Masons.

The outline plans include homes, offices, retail and leisure space, improved parks and transport, a hotel and scope for a new college.

There are also council offices, a library and an extension to the Towngate Theatre. "The plans extend beyond the shopping core, providing opportunities to maximise the range of facilities and job creation," said council leader Tony Ball.
