DC Casebook: Householder Development - Platform lift backed despite visual harm

The retention of a platform lift at a house in Lancashire has won approval from an inspector who determined that its impact on the street scene is not unduly intrusive.

The lift was sited at the front of the property, which stood on sloping ground. The inspector agreed that its impact on the street scene was limited when it was lowered but found that it became more prominent in its elevated position. Even though external wheelchair lifts were not prevalent in most residential areas, she decided that the development should be retained subject to a condition stipulating that the lift should be kept at ground-floor level when not in use.
