DC Casebook: Energy Development - Biomass boiler accepted in top landscape

A boiler powered by wood chips at a farm in the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty has been approved after an inspector held that it would make a small but significant contribution towards reducing carbon emissions.

A building some 5m high and almost 8m wide and deep would house the boiler, which would power a doctor's surgery, a farm shop and an office. Its limited size and siting within existing buildings would not undermine the area's natural beauty or cause adverse impacts on a nearby housing estate, the inspector opined.
