DC Casebook: Court cases - Travellers banned by injunction at farm

An Essex council has won a High Court injunction forbidding residential use of agricultural land after residents became concerned that Gypsies were about to move in.

Residents drew the council's attention to the appearance of hard core and fencing on a local farm. Mrs Justice Sharp agreed that very recent activity by persons unknown had given council officers good reason to apprehend the arrival of Gypsies or travellers and ruled that it was appropriate for an injunction to be issued. Any breach would constitute a contempt of court, she noted.
