Planning, 15 August 2008
The annual national young planners conference sails into Brighton and Hove on 10 October with a tour of the Brighton Earthship. It is one of five study visits in the packed two-day programme of speakers and events, highlighting social and environmental conflicts in planning.
Billed as one of the most progressive eco-buildings in Europe, the Earthship is a community centre developed by the Low Carbon Trust. It is designed to meet local social needs and inspire environmental change. It encourages the community to consider how to reduce its carbon footprint. The Earthship is built with recycled materials and uses renewable energy to offer heat, power and water. The tour will show how rainwater is harvested, power is generated from the wind and heat from the sun is stored and distributed. It will also look at the building's positive impact on the local community.
Other study visits on the conference programme include tours of the iconic Jubilee Library in central Brighton, the architecturally significant Embassy Court in Hove and the large mixed-use New England Quarter development adjacent to Brighton Station. The conference has an extensive programme, including a formal dinner on the Friday evening at the Old Ship Hotel on Brighton seafront. Tickets cost £125 + VAT if booked before 10 September, and £150 + VAT thereafter. Tickets for the conference dinner are £25.
