Taylor report rural framework recommendation welcomed

Planning, 8 August 2008

Matthew Taylor's report on rural communities provides clear guidance on the direction that rural policy should take, according to the RTPI.

It welcomed the recommendations to review the use of short-term delivery targets to assess the performance of local authority planning departments in favour of a more long-term approach. Policy director Rynd Smith said: "We are pleased that the report recognises the need to provide a clear and coherent national framework to guide growth." He supported the idea of a policy statement setting out how new neighbourhoods, community extensions and towns should be brought through the planning system as a good step towards ensuring that future housing need is achieved in a locally appropriate way. "The government should adopt this recommendation," he urged.
