Planning, 25 July 2008
Attendance at this year's RTPI Planning Convention was up on last year despite the economic downturn.
More than 730 attendees took part in the two-day event at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, with more than 40 exhibitors represented.
Communities secretary Hazel Blears used the event to announce new guidelines on retail development. It also acted as a forum for discussion on issues such as crime reduction, climate change, urbanisation, housing and planning education, boasting a line-up of speakers including Colombian ambassador to the USA Carolina Barco Isakson, DCLG chief planner-designate Steve Quartermain, Royal Institution director Baroness Susan Greenfield and architect and planner Sir Terry Farrell.
RTPI director of programmes and services Debbie Sorkin commented: "To attract more delegates than last year was extremely pleasing given the current state of the economy and the downturn in the housing market." Next year's Planning Convention will be held from 17 to 19 June.
