Institute heralds dropping of local member review board proposal

Planning, 25 July 2008

The RTPI's campaign to see the proposed introduction of local member review boards (LMRBs) removed from the Planning Bill has succeeded.

Communities minister Baroness Andrews told the House of Lords: "We have listened carefully to stakeholder views on this provision and concluded that, while it may bring some benefit it risks distracting local authorities particularly at a time when there is an urgent need for them to focus on strategic plans and issues. We therefore intend to drop this provision at committee stage."

The announcement is the culmination of a six-month RTPI campaign to see the bill amended. The action was developed largely in response to concerns raised by RTPI members that using LMRBs to hear planning application appeals would prove unjust and unworkable.
