Wales planning summit covers local and global issues

Planning, 18 July 2008

The first conference in Wales organised by RTPI Cymru was hailed as a success by the 200 delegates, who heard views from speakers on a range of planning issues facing the country.

Assembly government minister with planning responsibilities Jane Davidson launched a householders' guide to tackling climate change and plans to introduce minimum standards for buildings.

Vale of Glamorgan Council chief executive John Maitland Evans highlighted planners' role in achieving corporate objectives and the importance of "the ability to say no". He argued: "It is good-quality projects that will stand the test of time." This was echoed by Design Commission for Wales chief executive Carole-Anne Davies. She highlighted the need to increase design knowledge and greater public design awareness.

The upheaval and crisis faced by rural Wales was raised by Plaid Cymru president Dafydd Iwan. He called for good planning in providing affordable housing and for local amenities in villages as well as towns. The conference was sponsored by the Cardiff office of Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners. There were calls for the conference to be an annual event, so the search has begun for a bigger venue.
