Planning, 20 June 2008
The East Midlands young planners' group would like to thank everyone who attended its inaugural continuing professional development (CPD) and social event in Newark on 15 May, particularly Morgan Tucker managing director Matthew Tucker and his team for hosting the group and senior transport planner Venezia Ross-Gilmore for organising the event.
Tucker gave a witty and informative talk on his company's role in delivering the Bow East logistics centre, one of the largest in Europe. Once operational, it will carry 9,000 tonnes of material a day for the construction of the London 2012 Olympic park and village. The talk provided practical transferrable lessons on partnership working and the need for a flexible hands-on approach.
The CPD element was followed by an opportunity to network over a buffet and drinks. The evening was topped off with a Nintendo Wii tournament. East Midlands young planners representative Victoria Bankes Price commented: "There is nothing like a bit of boxing and tennis on the big screen to ensure group bonding." However, she added: "It is a relief that hand-eye co-ordination is not part of the assessment of professional competence."
