Obituary - Michael Sanders
Michael Sanders, a leading figure in local government, planning and European co-operation, has died suddenly at the age of 62. After a career in local government and the Planning Inspectorate, Sanders became director-general of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives in 2002, leading the UK's involvement in one of the EU's INTERREG programmes, promoting joint working between local and regional government in the countries of north-western Europe.
He was Warrington Borough Council chief executive from 1989 to 1997, moving up from the post of chief planning and estates officer. While he was there he played an instrumental role in the regeneration of the borough, attracting leading companies to the area, including the Northwest Regional Development Agency's headquarters. Following the IRA bombing in Warrington in 1993, Sanders worked with leading councillors and the parents of the children who were killed to set up the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace. Earlier in his career he was Wirral Borough Council chief planning officer, where he worked to ensure that the region did not suffer from the anonymous urban sprawl that characterised many similar metropolitan areas. Sanders studied at the University of Edinburgh and completed his postgraduate qualifications in Liverpool.
