The RTPI has called on the government to adopt an eco-quarters policy that encompasses urban expansion projects and redevelopments.
The institute suggests that the eco-town concept should be expanded to encompass all types of housing development so only the most environmentally friendly and locally appropriate housing is allowed to proceed.
The only way to guarantee this is to ensure that all housing is brought through a local plan-led development framework, with every application judged against the same criteria, according to secretary-general Robert Upton.
The RTPI is calling on the government to raise the minimum environmental standards that eco-towns must achieve to gain approval and broaden the concept to include regeneration and urban expansion projects. Upton said: "Shifting focus from an eco-town to an eco-quarters policy would be a positive step in delivering sustainable lifestyles. Locating development as part of existing towns reduces the need to travel."
