Report plots progress on community involvement in core strategy

Planning, 4 July 2008

The final report of the Spatial Plans in Practice research programme charting the implementation of the new planning system in England has been published by the DCLG.

The team of Baker Associates, Terence O'Rourke and the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester and the West of England remarked that generally progress has been slow and public involvement in the preparation of core strategies has been disappointing. The report records "promising moves to more collaborative working in plan-making, particularly in local authorities", emphasising the links between sustainable community strategies and development plans. The study concludes, however, that plan-making authorities could make greater efforts in gathering the right type of evidence at the right time in a cost-effective way.
