UK Coal has dramatically cut the size of its shortlisted eco-town plan for Rossington, South Yorkshire.
Britain’s biggest coal producer said it had reduced the size of the scheme from 15,000 homes to 5,000 over concerns raised the local community, the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and the government’s Ecotown Challenge Panel.
UK Coal chief executive Jon Lloyd said: "Our planning team has addressed all the significant issues raised and have created a vision which is achievable, sustainable and embraces the existing community while meeting all environmental objectives set by government.”
“We sincerely hope local people will welcome these proposals as they gain substantially from the provision of additional facilities, provided by a private and publicly funded partnership which will help regenerate and rejuvenate the existing community."
The revised plans, drawn up by Leeds-based Spawforths will see 300 acres of brownfield land for housing, 125 acres for Green space, 10 acres for schools, five acres for retail and community use and 30 acres for employment development.
