Landowner quits Cambridgeshire eco-town

Ben Lee, PlanningResource, 18 July 2008

Hanley Grange: uncertain future

Hanley Grange: uncertain future

Plans for an eco-town near Cambridge have been thrown into doubt after one of the landowners pulled out of the scheme.

The Wellcome Trust owns 270 acres on The Hanley Grange site, where Jarrow Investments, which owns much of the remaining land, had proposed to build 12,000 homes.

Jarrow, acting on behalf of Tesco, has met fierce local opposition from campaign groups and the council.

Hanley Grange’s project director said the project team would now look at the potential options for moving forward but no decisions had yet been made.

The blow comes days after Jarrow had upped the number of homes proposed for the Hanley Grange eco town from 8,000 to 12,800.

Campaigners reacted with fury after Jarrow’s move on the last day of the 12-week consultation, prior to the Wellcome Trust’s announcement.

Jarrow had told the DCLG its phase one proposals remained the same but was anticipating there would be opportunities for additional homes in an opportunity area in the northern part of the site

Several other sites on the government’s 15-strong eco-town shortlist have already been withdrawn, including Curborough in Staffordshire and Manby in Lincolnshire.
