Caroline Flint
Secretary of state for communities and local government Caroline Flint has confirmed that the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) will have no role in deciding on eco-towns.
In answer to a parliamentary question yesterday from shadow housing minister Grant Shapps on whether there would be a national policy statement on eco-towns, Flint said: "National policy statements set the framework for decisions by the Infrastructure Planning Commission, which is being considered under proposals in the Planning Bill.
"Its role will be to consider nationally significant infrastructure projects, such as proposals for major new power stations. There will not be a national policy statement for eco-towns. Planning applications for eco-towns will be submitted to the appropriate local authority."
The IPC will decide on schemes of national importance including airports and nuclear power stations.
