Government fights back over eco-towns

The government has hit back at eco-town opponents with the publication of a poll showing more people in England support eco-towns than oppose them.

Forty-six per cent said they supported the developments. Nine per cent opposed them.

A third said they would support them within five miles of their home and 15 % would oppose one.

Thirteen per cent said there was already sufficient affordable housing in their area.

Caroline Flint, housing minister, said the poll showed the recognition among the public of the importance of building more affordable homes and their support for the idea of an eco-town in their local area.

She said: "Eco-towns are a new concept in England and we know that they invoke strong opinions. That's why the consultation process is so important. However, our initial research among the general public shows clear support in favour of eco-towns.

"This is an important consultation, but all voices should be heard, not just those who shout loudest. We recognise that some people do have concerns, but this research underlines the real recognition among the general public of the importance of building more affordable homes, and their support for the idea of an eco-town in the local area.

The deadline falls today for written responses to the government’s initial consultation.

The government will publish the draft planning policy statement next month that sets out more detailed specifications.

A final shortlist of locations will be published this autumn.
