Government sees off Planning Bill rebellion

Michael Donnelly, PlanningResource, 26 June 2008

The government has seen off a backbench rebellion over its planning reforms including its Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC).

The move means that the IPC will now be set up to determine major infrastructure schemes, such as airports and nuclear power stations.

Rebel Labour MPs, backed by Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, had wanted ministers to retain political control over such decisions but the move was rejected by 303 votes to 260, a government majority of 43.

The government made a string of concession on Tuesday which appear to have appeased many rebel MPs.
